Sumgait

Sumgait is an industrial city on the Caspian coast on the Absheron Peninsula with wide streets and factory complexes. The city spreads across several square kilometers and displays typical characteristics of a Soviet-era planned city.

The city was founded in 1944 as a suburb of Baku and received city status in 1949. It quickly became a center for chemical manufacturing during Soviet times.

The city is home to educational institutions that train specialists for industrial work. These schools shape daily life and attract students from across the region.

The city is reached from Baku by regular buses or railway, with the drive taking about 40 minutes along the coast. Visiting during warmer months makes the experience more comfortable.

Remains of an ancient caravanserai with artifacts from old tribes were discovered during construction work in the area. This find shows that the location was a trading hub long before the modern city was built.
