Mardakert District, Administrative district in Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan
Mardakert is an administrative district in Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan, that spreads across mountainous terrain with several towns and villages. The main settlement, Ağdərə, serves as the capital and is located in the northern part of the region.
The district was created in 1930 as Jrabert and renamed Mardakert in 1939, remaining part of Azerbaijan SSR until 1991. After the Soviet collapse, the region underwent significant territorial changes.
The district recorded significant demographic shifts through census data, with the population including Armenian, Azerbaijani, and Russian communities between 1926 and 1979.
The area is accessible through mountain passes and requires basic navigation across its scattered settlements. Visitors should prepare for varying elevation and limited local services in the region.
The district was divided into three parts in 1992 and distributed among Kalbajar, Tartar, and Ağdam districts. This division fundamentally reshaped the region's territorial organization.
