Yasamal cemetery

Yasamal Cemetery is a burial ground in Baku that spans several hectares and contains separate sections for Muslim, Jewish, and Christian burial traditions. The grounds are organized into distinct zones to accommodate the needs of different faith communities.

The cemetery was established in 1940 and has grown to become the largest burial ground in Baku. Over the decades, it has received the remains of military leaders, politicians, and cultural figures.

Notable individuals interred here include jazz composer Vagif Mustafazadeh, theater actor Aliagha Aghayev, and opera singer Rubaba Muradova.

The cemetery is typically open to visitors during daylight hours and has separate entrances for different faith groups. It is advisable to wear appropriate clothing and observe local customs when visiting.

The cemetery contains the grave of Ayaz Mutallibov, Azerbaijan's first president, who was buried there in 2022. This burial site is a significant landmark for understanding the nation's recent history.
