Teesta River, Himalayan river in Rangpur Division, Bangladesh
The Teesta River is a Himalayan river in Rangpur Division, Bangladesh, flowing from glacial sources in the north down to its junction with the Brahmaputra. It crosses valleys, plains, and farmlands as it travels south through the region.
The waterway once flowed into the Padma, but a flood altered its course permanently eastward in the late 18th century. It has since merged directly with the Brahmaputra, shaping the river system of northeastern Bengal.
The name Teesta likely comes from a local term referring to the silvery-gray color of its water. Farmers along its banks have relied on its flow for centuries to grow rice, jute, and vegetables in the fertile plains.
The waterway is visible from several banks along its lower reaches, especially in dry months when water levels drop. Currents can be strong, so approach the shore areas with care.
The drainage basin crosses three states and includes both high-altitude glaciers and tropical lowlands. Water flow varies dramatically between the dry season and monsoon, when the channel often overflows its banks.
