Bangla Bazar is a traditional book market in the heart of Old Dhaka, Bangladesh, spreading across several narrow lanes lined with small shops and open stalls. The area is tightly packed, with books stacked from floor to ceiling and sellers calling out to passing shoppers.
The market took shape in the 19th century when Old Dhaka was a busy trading area, and it gradually became the city's main spot for books and printed materials. After Bangladesh's independence in 1971, demand for books in the Bengali language grew, and the market expanded to meet it.
Bangla Bazar is known across Dhaka as the city's main book market, drawing students, teachers, and readers looking for new and secondhand titles. The stalls along the main lanes are stacked with Bengali literature, textbooks, and academic books at prices that attract regular buyers.
The best time to visit is in the morning or early afternoon, when most sellers are open and the lanes are a bit easier to move through. Wear comfortable shoes since the ground can be uneven and the passages between stalls are very narrow.
A large share of the books on sale here are local reprints or photocopied editions, produced to keep prices low for students who could not otherwise afford them. This means that some titles long out of print elsewhere can still be found on these shelves.
