Carmichael College, educational institution in Rangpur, Bangladesh
Carmichael College is a government degree college in Rangpur, Bangladesh, spread across a large campus with buildings from different periods side by side. Classrooms, administrative offices, a library, and open outdoor areas are arranged across the grounds, which students move through throughout the day.
The college was founded in 1916 during British rule, making it one of the oldest higher education institutions in northern Bengal. Over the following decades it grew steadily, adding new buildings and expanding the range of subjects taught on campus.
The college is named after Lord Carmichael, a British governor of Bengal, and his name remains visible on the campus to this day. Students from across the wider region gather here, giving the grounds a sense of daily life that feels more like a small town than a single school.
The campus is open during the day when classes are in session, and visiting outside peak arrival and departure times makes moving around easier. The grounds are large enough that starting with a rough sense of the layout helps you find the main buildings without too much wandering.
The college is one of the few institutions in Bangladesh that was founded before the 1947 partition of India and has remained in continuous operation since then. Some of the original buildings from the early years are still standing on campus and look noticeably different from the structures added later.
