Ganges Barrage Project, Water infrastructure project in Pangsha Upazila, Bangladesh
The Ganges Barrage Project was a planned water infrastructure facility in the Pangsha region near the Indian border. It was designed to include a large reservoir that would store and regulate water during dry seasons.
The concept for this project began in 1963 when an American engineering firm proposed a counter-barrage to regulate water supply during lean periods. The plan was developed over decades before ultimately being cancelled in 2017.
The project represented Bangladesh's attempt to address water scarcity caused by the upstream Farakka Barrage in India. It reflected the country's desire to manage water resources independently.
Since this project was never built, there is nothing to visit at the site. The area remains an agricultural region near the border.
The project was internationally contentious because India raised concerns about its effects on upstream water control. These diplomatic tensions contributed to the decision to cancel it.
