Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College, medical college and hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh
Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College is a public medical school in the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area of Dhaka, training doctors and other healthcare workers. The campus holds teaching rooms, laboratories, a library, and a hospital with around 350 beds that treats patients across several departments.
The institution started as Ayub Central Hospital in 1963 and was converted into a medical school in 2005. Four years later, it received its current name in honor of a key figure in the country's past.
The college is named after Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, a politician who played a central role in the history of Bangladesh. His name appears at the entrance and serves as a daily reminder of that connection for students and staff.
The campus sits near several government buildings and is easy to reach by public transport. Because it is an active teaching and hospital site, it is worth checking with staff about visitor access before walking into any building.
The site was originally laid out for a hospital and kept that larger footprint when it became a college, giving it more open space between buildings than most similar sites in the city. This means visitors walking across the grounds notice wide outdoor areas that are unusual for an urban medical facility.
