Opéra Royal de Wallonie
Opéra Royal de Wallonie, Opera house in Liège, Belgium
The Opéra Royal de Wallonie is an opera house with neoclassical design featuring a marble colonnade and ground-floor arcades in its rectangular structure. The interior contains a multi-tiered hall designed for watching opera and ballet performances.
King William I of the Netherlands provided land from a former Dominican convent in 1816 for building this theater, which opened in 1820. Between 2009 and 2012, the building underwent major renovation that restored historical elements while adding modern facilities.
The opera house serves as a gathering place where locals and visitors come together to experience classical music and theatrical performances. Inside, the red velvet seats and gilt decorations create an atmosphere that encourages people to dress up and mark the occasion as special.
The building is located on rue des Dominicains and is easy to recognize from the street by its classical marble-columned facade. When planning a visit, keep in mind that performances happen regularly throughout the year, though exact times change depending on the schedule.
In 1842, the heart of composer André Grétry was placed inside the monument standing in front of the building, where it remains today. This unusual honor reflects the city's deep connection to the composer and classical music.
