De Westhoek

De Westhoek is a nature reserve at the westernmost point of De Panne, spanning 345 hectares with dunes, beaches, forests, meadows, and marshes. These varied habitats support over 200 bird species and numerous plant varieties found throughout the area.

The area received protected status to preserve its ecological importance for the Belgian coast. This recognition established it as a key conservation area for the region.

Local conservation groups actively work here, showing visitors how coastal communities engage with protecting their natural surroundings. You can see this commitment reflected in how the landscape is managed and maintained today.

Marked pathways with varying distances guide you through the reserve, and the main parking area is located at Duinhoekstraat 174 where you can begin exploring. The trails are well-signposted and easy to navigate throughout the area.

Highland cattle and Konik horses roam freely across the landscape, playing a natural role in vegetation management. These animals help keep the dunes and meadows open, preventing overgrowth of certain plant species.
