Les Moëres, Agricultural polder across French-Belgian border in Westhoek region, Northern Europe
The polder extends across two countries, with channels and pumping stations maintaining water levels at 2.5 meters below sea level throughout the territory.
In 1617, Wenceslas Cobergher initiated the drainage of these marshlands under the direction of Archduke Albert VII of Austria and his wife Isabella.
The area contains traditional 19th-century houses on both sides of the border, reflecting the architectural heritage of French Flanders and Belgium.
The territory operates under two administrative systems: Les Moëres in Nord department, France, and De Moeren in Veurne municipality, Belgium.
This polder represents the lowest geographical point in the Dunkirk district at 4 meters below sea level, requiring constant water management.
