Mount Tenakourou, Mountain summit at Cascades Region border, Burkina Faso and Mali
Mount Tenakourou is a sandstone formation in the Léraba Region, located along the border between Burkina Faso and Mali. It rises from a plateau and forms part of a larger Paleozoic massif in southwestern Africa.
The mountain has existed as a natural geographic formation for millions of years. In the 1970s, French surveyors left a stone structure at the summit related to mapping work in the region.
The name comes from the Dyula language and refers to the village situated at its base. Local communities have long connected the mountain to their sense of place and identity.
The best access is through the village of Kankalaba, which lies northwest of Sindou. From there, visitors can explore routes toward the summit, with sturdy footwear and water being essential supplies.
From the top on clear days, visitors can see across borders into three different countries. The view stretches far enough to reach into neighboring territories beyond the immediate borderlands.
