Bulgarka Nature Park, Nature park in Gabrovo region, Bulgaria.
Bulgarka Nature Park is a protected area in the central Stara Planina range, in the Gabrovo region of Bulgaria. It covers dense forests, open mountain meadows, and rocky slopes spread across several elevation levels.
The park was established in 2002 to protect the mountain ecosystems of this part of the Stara Planina. Long before that, the area was used by local communities for herding and forest gathering, as old paths and nearby villages still show.
This place is where locals have long gathered forest plants and practiced traditional herding in the mountain meadows. The park today reflects this deep connection between the people of the region and the landscape they inhabit.
Walking the marked trails is the usual way to move through the park, and the routes range from easy slopes to more demanding sections. Sturdy shoes and extra layers are a good idea since mountain weather can shift quickly at higher elevations.
Some of the plant species found here grow only in this corner of the Balkans and nowhere else in the world. The park is also home to rare animals listed in Bulgaria's official conservation records, making it one of the few places where they can still be observed in the wild.
