Hadzhi Dimitar Peak, Mountain summit in Central Balkan Mountains, Bulgaria
Hadzhi Dimitar is a mountain summit in the Central Balkan range near Kazanlak that reaches 1441 meters above sea level. Limestone and granite form the underlying rock structure, while grassy slopes cover the terrain leading to the top.
A battle took place here in August 1868 between Bulgarian insurgents led by Hadzhi Dimitar and Ottoman troops. The fighters attempted to hold their position against superior forces during the movement for independence.
The name originates from Turkish word 'buzluca', reflecting the cold conditions at this elevation in the Central Balkan mountain range.
Two access roads lead from Shipka Pass to the summit, with the route from Kazanlak offering better driving conditions. The path east of the pass is easier for most visitors to navigate and suits a trip without special equipment.
Explosive work with TNT in 1974 lowered the summit by 9 meters to create a level surface for the monument. The original rock formation was completely altered so the memorial could be built on this spot.
