Thracian tomb Shushmanets

Shushmanets is an ancient burial site in Shipka featuring a central chamber surrounded by Doric columns and a distinctive central pillar. The structure displays a circular layout with the pillar composed of radial stone blocks and walls constructed from crushed stone.

Archaeologists discovered this burial site in 1996, tracing it back to the 4th century BC when it functioned as a temple structure. It was later transformed into a Thracian burial chamber for the region's elite.

The tomb's circular chamber includes seven Doric columns and a central pillar made of fifteen radial blocks, representing Thracian architectural expertise.

Access requires walking through a forest path leading to the underground entrance where steps descend into the chamber. Wear appropriate footwear and expect humid conditions typical of underground burial sites.

Excavations revealed bones of four horses and two dogs in the antechamber, providing evidence of ancient sacrifice rituals. These animal remains offer insight into how Thracians honored their deceased during burial ceremonies.
