Zlatnite Mostove, Stone river formation in Vitosha Mountain, Bulgaria
Zlatnite Mostove is a massive collection of large rocky boulders scattered across a wide zone along the Vladayska River valley in Vitosha Mountain. The rocks consist of syenite and spread over an extensive area at altitudes between 1350 and 1500 meters.
This formation was created during the Ice Age, when spherical weathering processes broke down syenite rocks and accumulated these boulders along ancient river beds. Continuous erosion and movement over thousands of years shaped the arrangement you see today.
The name comes from yellow lichens that grow on the rocks and give them a golden tint. You can see these colored crusts on many of the large boulders as you walk through the area.
The site sits at high altitude and requires good fitness for the hike to reach it. The best time to visit is between May and October, when conditions are safest and the trail remains easily walkable.
This place displays a rare geological phenomenon where the large boulders lie in an arrangement that resembles a frozen river of stone. Many visitors overlook how the stone arrangement actually traces the old river path, even though the river itself has long since changed course.
