Museum of History, Museu em Samokov, Bulgária
The Museum of History is a history museum in Bulgaria's capital housing over 120,000 objects displayed across eight rooms. The collection includes archaeological finds and everyday items that document Sofia's development from the 6th century BC to the 1940s.
Founded in 1928 with the first exhibition opening in 1941, the museum originally suffered bomb damage during World War II. The institution relocated to its current home in the historic mineral baths building in 2015.
The building once served as Sofia's Central Mineral Baths, and its architecture from the early 20th century remains visible in its simple, functional style. This transformation from a public bathing house to a history museum reflects how the city repurposes its heritage structures.
The museum sits in Sofia's city center and is easy to reach on foot, with ramps and elevators for accessibility. Temporary exhibitions rotate alongside the permanent displays, offering reasons to return throughout the year.
A gold seal from 1378 found on Vitosha mountain is the oldest known object to explicitly name the city as Sofia. The collection also features a royal carriage and Stone Age household items that span thousands of years of history.
