Buynovsko Gorge, Limestone ravine in Borino Municipality, Bulgaria.
Buynovsko Gorge is a limestone ravine in the Rhodope Mountains within Borino Municipality, Bulgaria, carved by the Buynovska River. The rock walls on both sides rise steeply, leaving only a narrow strip for the road and river to run side by side.
The ravine formed over millions of years as the Buynovska River slowly cut through the limestone of the Rhodope Mountains. In the 20th century, the site was designated a natural landmark to protect its geological character.
The gorge has served as a passage for shepherds moving livestock through the Rhodope Mountains for generations. Traces of this pastoral tradition are still part of the local identity along the route.
The gorge is reached by a narrow mountain road where oncoming traffic can appear at any moment, so driving slowly is important. Going outside the busiest travel periods makes it easier to navigate the tightest sections of the passage.
At a spot called Vulchi Skok, the cliff faces press in so close to the road that the passage feels like driving through a natural rock tunnel. This section is the tightest point in the gorge and catches most visitors off guard.
