Eledzhik, Protected nature reserve in Sredna Gora Mountains, Bulgaria

Eledzhik is a 668-hectare protected area on the Vetren ridge of the Ihtiman Sredna Gora, centred on Benkovski Peak (1185.8 m). It lies in the lands of Ihtiman, Mirovo and Muhovo (Ihtiman municipality) and Gorna Vasilitsa (Kostenets municipality). Beech forests dominate, with common hornbeam and sessile oak on drier ground and patches of oriental hornbeam.

In 1975 the area around Benkovski Peak (1185.8 m) was declared a historical site. In 2003 it was reclassified as a protected area of 668 hectares, keeping the same size and the same rules on permitted activities. The protection targets the natural beech forests on the slopes of the Vetren ridge, in the Ihtiman Sredna Gora, within the lands of Ihtiman, Mirovo, Muhovo and Gorna Vasilitsa.

The name Eledzhik comes from the ridge in the Vetren hills of Ihtiman Sredna Gora where the area lies. The beech woods around Benkovski Peak (1185.8 m) are the reason for protection, and the open ground above the tree line holds the richer birdlife, with plain species entering from below.

The area has marked hiking trails for visitors to explore, with spring and autumn providing the best conditions for observing wildlife and plants. It is advisable to wear sturdy footwear and prepare for changing weather conditions that shift quickly in the mountains.

The reserve functions as a natural corridor connecting different mountain ranges, allowing wildlife to migrate and exchange genes between populations. This role makes it an important location for the long-term stability of animal populations across the region.
