Soskovcheto, Nature reserve in Rhodope Mountains, Bulgaria.
Soskovcheto is a nature reserve in the Rhodope Mountains covering approximately 175 hectares and cut through by the Soskovchansky river. The landscape consists of thick forests, steep hiking routes, and many waterfalls carved into the slopes.
The area became an official protected site in 1968 to safeguard the local plant and animal life of the Rhodopes. This decision reflected wider efforts to defend valuable mountain systems from overuse.
The name reflects the region's local heritage and mountain traditions. Visitors today see how the protected area serves as a gathering place for people who want to experience the river and forest on foot.
You can reach the area through marked trails starting from Arnautskoto or from the road between Smolyan and Kriva Reka. Wear proper hiking boots because the paths are steep and can become slippery, especially after rain.
The area is home to around 46 waterfalls, with ten visible from the main path, and they flow most powerfully during early months. This concentration of falls in such a small space sets it apart in the region.
