Uhlovitsa

Uhlovitsa is a cave system in the Rhodope Mountains consisting of two levels connected by natural passages and extending 460 meters in total length. The interior features limestone formations shaped over time, with distinct passages linking different chambers throughout the system.

Local residents Dimitar and Georgi Raichev discovered the cave system in 1967, which led to its development as a tourist destination. This discovery opened the cave for public exploration and turned it into a known attraction in the Rhodope region.

The name reflects local knowledge of the owls that inhabit this area, linking the cave to the wildlife of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Guided tours take visitors through approximately 330 meters of the cave system, with the temperature remaining cool throughout the year. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and a light jacket, as the ground is uneven and the underground environment stays cold regardless of season.

Four sinter lakes appear within the cave system during spring months, while a white travertine formation at its end resembles a frozen waterfall. These mineral deposits were shaped over thousands of years by the gradual movement of water through rock.
