Agushevi konatsi, Medieval castle complex in Mogilitsa, Bulgaria.
Agushevi konatsi is a castle complex in Mogilitsa, Bulgaria, consisting of three connected residential buildings arranged around courtyards. The structures spread across more than 3,000 square meters with multiple levels, creating an intricate layout of interconnected rooms and passages.
The estate was built by Bulgarian craftsmen between 1820 and 1840 for an Ottoman feudal lord and his three sons. It became the largest family castle in the Rhodopes region during this period of Ottoman rule.
The third floor housed specialized rooms designed for merchants and visiting guests, with discrete alcoves created for private business conversations. These spaces reveal how the family balanced their role as local traders with their position in Ottoman society.
The complex operates today as an ethnographic museum, with guided tours available through the preserved interior spaces. Visitors can explore traditional architectural features and domestic rooms to understand daily life during the 19th century.
The residence included internal bathrooms and individual heating systems with fireplaces in each room, demonstrating sophisticated engineering for the 1800s. These amenities were unusual for homes of that period and reflected the wealth and status of the family.
