Amazon Delta, River delta in Pará and Amapá, Brazil

The Amazon Delta is a vast river delta in northern Brazil where the Amazon and Tocantins rivers empty into the Atlantic through multiple channels and outlets. The system spans across two states and creates a complex network of islands, waterways, and wetland areas.

The delta developed over millions of years as sediment from the Amazon and Tocantins rivers continuously accumulated and shaped the landscape. These deposits created the layered structure and waterways that exist in the region today.

Fishing communities in the area have developed ways of life closely tied to the seasonal water patterns of the delta. Local people rely on knowledge passed down through generations about when and where to find fish and other resources.

The best way to view the delta is by boat tour from Belém or Macapá, which offer different perspectives depending on whether you travel during wet or dry season. The wet season fills the waterways to their fullest, while the dry season reveals more of the islands and landforms.

Despite releasing huge quantities of sediment into the ocean each year, the delta lacks the typical fan shape seen in most major river deltas worldwide. Instead it spreads as a broad system of multiple outlets and interconnected channels.
