Fuerte de São Joaquim do Rio Branco

The fortress stands at the confluence of the Rio Branco and Tacutu rivers, featuring walls reaching 5.4 meters in height and an extension of 18 meters.

Built between 1775 and 1778 under Captain Phillip Sturm's direction, the fortress protected Portuguese interests against Spanish and Dutch territorial advances in northern Brazil.

The construction incorporated indigenous labor and established one of the first European military settlements in the Rio Branco region of the Brazilian Amazon.

The fortress ruins received national heritage status from IPHAN in 2001 and remain accessible for historical research and documentation purposes.

The structure's mortar was made from local clay, demonstrating regional building techniques while maintaining resistance despite limited construction resources.
