Caledon, Lower-tier municipality in Regional Municipality of Peel, Canada.
Caledon is a municipality in the Regional Municipality of Peel in southern Ontario, Canada. The area stretches over hilly countryside with forests, farms and small settlements north of Toronto.
The municipality was formed in 1974 by merging several older townships and villages. Before that, parts of the territory belonged to other administrative units such as Chinguacousy and Albion.
The name comes from the Earl of Caledon in Northern Ireland and reflects the Irish roots of many early settlers. You can still see this connection today in local festivals and the names of old inns.
The settlements lie along country roads and are easiest to reach by car. Distances between communities can be considerable, so having your own vehicle is recommended.
A museum in the Caledon Village section displays objects from the time of early settlement and the Indigenous inhabitants. The collections offer insight into how life in the region has changed over the decades.
