Regional Municipality of Peel, Regional municipality in Southern Ontario, Canada
Peel is a regional municipality in southern Ontario that brings together the three separate cities of Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon under a shared administrative structure within the Greater Toronto Area. Each of these cities maintains its own municipal government while the regional level handles large-scale infrastructure and coordinated services.
The provincial government created this regional structure in 1974, dissolving the earlier Peel County to streamline governance of rapidly growing suburban areas around Toronto. The formation reflected the need for coordinated planning as cities expanded and their boundaries blurred during the second half of the 20th century.
The municipality serves a population of 1.5 million residents through a diverse council structure that represents the interests of Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon.
Administrative facilities are located in Brampton, where offices provide and oversee services for all three member cities, including water treatment, waste management, and emergency medical care. Regional council meetings take place regularly and are open to the public, allowing residents to observe decisions that affect their communities.
Toronto Pearson International Airport lies entirely within these regional boundaries, drawing thousands of travelers through the municipality daily. This geographical quirk makes the area a main gateway for Canada even though it sits technically outside the city of Toronto.
