McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Art museum in Kleinburg, Ontario, Canada
The McMichael Canadian Art Collection is an art museum housed in a fieldstone building set across more than 100 acres of forested land along the Humber River. Inside are over 7,000 artworks created by Canadian and Indigenous artists.
The museum grew from a private collection that Robert and Signe McMichael began gathering in 1955, opening to the public in 1965. What started as a focus on Group of Seven paintings later expanded to show a broader picture of Canadian art across time.
The artworks on display show how Canadian painters saw and captured their country's landscape in different ways. Alongside well-known artists, the collection includes pieces by creators from First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities who brought different voices to Canadian art.
The museum is about 40 minutes from Toronto by car and sits in wooded surroundings that invite walking and exploration. Visitors can tour the grounds, join guided visits, or have a meal at the on-site restaurant.
On the museum grounds sits a cemetery where six members of the Group of Seven are buried. This connection between the physical place and the artists who painted it creates something you won't find elsewhere.
