McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Art museum in Kleinburg, Vaughan, Canada
The McMichael Canadian Art Collection sits on 40 hectares of forest with a main building made of logs, stone fireplaces, and 14 exhibition halls spread throughout. The spaces are designed to show artworks in context and guide visitors through rooms filled with Canadian paintings.
Robert and Signe McMichael founded the museum in 1965 by donating their collection of 194 paintings and the property to the Ontario government. The building was then designed to reflect Canadian architectural traditions and to house the growing collection.
The collection displays Canadian artists from the early 1900s onward, including works by the Group of Seven, indigenous creators, and contemporary painters who shaped how people see Canada. Visitors encounter how these artists explored landscape and identity in ways that continue to matter today.
The museum is located in the village of Kleinburg and is accessible by car with parking on the grounds. Wear comfortable shoes since the property is spread out and requires walking to explore the exhibition halls and forest areas.
The property includes a cemetery where six members of the Group of Seven are buried, surrounded by 500 cedar trees planted to recreate their painted landscapes. This quiet place connects the artists with the nature that inspired them.
