Olympic Stadium, Olympic Stadium in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district, Montreal, Canada.
The Olympic Stadium is an oval multipurpose arena in the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district of Montreal, Canada. Its slanted tower leans away from the main structure and is anchored to the building's main ring by steel cables.
Construction began in 1973 to complete the stadium in time for the 1976 Summer Olympics. The retractable roof was added eleven years later in 1987, finishing the original design.
The tower once held cables that pulled the massive Kevlar roof across the field and retracted it again. Today visitors ride a funicular lift up to an observation deck where they can look out over the city and the Saint Lawrence River below.
The nearest metro station is Pie-IX, just a short walk from the main entrance. Several bus lines stop nearby, and a large parking area is available for those arriving by car.
Around 12,000 precast concrete pieces were assembled on site, and each part had to fit within millimeter accuracy. The assembly resembled a giant three-dimensional puzzle that required precise planning and engineering.
