Dewey Soper Migratory Bird Sanctuary

The sanctuary extends over 816,599 hectares of marshy lowlands, tidal flats, and circular shallow lakes along the western coast of Baffin Island.

The Canadian government established this sanctuary on June 20, 1957, designating it as the first protected bird area in the Arctic region.

The sanctuary operates under the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement, which incorporates traditional Indigenous knowledge into wildlife management practices.

Access to the sanctuary requires air transportation, and visitors need permits from Environment and Climate Change Canada before entering the protected area.

The sanctuary hosts the largest goose colony worldwide, supporting nearly 30 percent of Canada's breeding geese population within its boundaries.
