Bata Shoes Head Office, Corporate office building in North York, Ontario, Canada
The headquarters is a modernist building with white pavilion-like structures made of concrete and glass, positioned on a hill at the intersection of Don Valley Parkway and Eglinton Avenue East. The complex spreads across the property with clear geometric forms and open spaces.
The building was constructed in 1965 by architect John B. Parkin as the North American headquarters for Bata Shoes. The company itself originated in Czechoslovakia and began making shoes there in 1894.
The headquarters represented the ambitions of a major shoe manufacturer to establish a modern corporate base in North America. Its distinctive form and location made it a recognizable landmark in Toronto's skyline.
The location sits on a hill at a major road intersection and is easily recognizable from the surrounding area. Visitors should be aware that access may be limited or the grounds may be undergoing changes following the ownership transition.
The property was purchased by the Aga Khan Foundation in 2002 to develop an Ismaili Centre, a museum of Islamic art, and a public park on the site. This transformation illustrates how industrial landmarks can be repurposed into new cultural institutions.
