Dundurn Castle

Dundurn Castle is a neoclassical mansion with forty rooms in Hamilton, blending Italian and Regency design elements throughout its structure. The estate also houses a military museum displaying artifacts and information related to Canadian military history.

Sir Allan Napier MacNab, Premier of the time, commissioned architect Robert Charles Wetherell to build this mansion in 1835. The estate became an important landmark reflecting the wealth and status of Canadian society during the nineteenth century.

The rooms are furnished as they were in the 1850s, with costumed interpreters showing how wealthy Canadian families lived and spent their days. You can observe the routines and customs of that era as people moved through the spaces.

Visitors can explore the estate through guided tours covering both the mansion and the military museum. It is helpful to check opening hours in advance to plan your visit comfortably.

The grounds include a historic kitchen garden growing more than two hundred old vegetable varieties in traditional ways. The harvested produce is partly donated to local food banks in the area.
