Wheatley Provincial Park, Provincial park in Chatham-Kent, Canada
Wheatley Provincial Park is a natural area in Chatham-Kent containing roughly 240 hectares (595 acres) of mixed forest with creeks winding through the landscape. The terrain slopes gently toward Lake Erie with trails for walking, a beach area, and spots designed for observing wildlife.
This protected area was established in 1971 by Ontario Parks to preserve the local woodland environment. The site was set aside to safeguard the natural forest habitat and the species living within it.
This place serves as a crucial stopover for migratory birds traveling between North and South America. The forest and wetlands here support bird watching throughout the year, especially during spring and fall migrations.
The park is accessible from Klondyke Road and operates seasonally from April through October, with four campgrounds offering both powered and unpowered camping sites. Visitors should plan their trip during warmer months when all facilities and trails are fully open, and bring insect repellent for the wetter forest areas.
The location sits at the same latitude as Northern California, which gives it a warmer climate than most of Ontario. This allows plant species typically found much farther south to grow here in the forest.
