Thorndike Peaks, Mountain group in Ellesmere Island, Canada.
Thorndike Peaks is a group of mountains located near Makinson Inlet on the east coast of Ellesmere Island. The summits reach approximately 940 meters (3,084 feet) and dominate the surrounding Arctic terrain with bare rock formations.
The peaks were documented in the American Alpine Journal and remain among the least explored mountain ranges in the Canadian Arctic. They reflect the harsh geological history of the far north and the challenges explorers face in accessing such distant terrain.
The mountains stand within the Qikiqtaaluk Region of Nunavut, where Indigenous peoples maintain strong connections to the surrounding Arctic landscapes.
Access requires specialized Arctic gear and is extremely demanding due to harsh weather that persists year-round in this remote location. Only experienced and well-prepared travelers should attempt to visit, as there is virtually no infrastructure in this isolated region.
The mountains sit north of the tree line, so they feature completely treeless rock slopes and sparse vegetation throughout. This absence of forest creates an unusually exposed and barren mountain landscape that looks dramatically different from ranges in warmer regions.
