Canton of Neuchâtel, Canton in western Switzerland
The canton extends over 802 square kilometers, from Lake Neuchâtel to the Jura Mountains, containing six administrative districts with varied landscapes.
The territory emerged as a distinct region in 1034 under the control of Count Ulrich of Fenis, later becoming a principality ruled by Prussia.
French serves as the primary language throughout the canton, which forms part of the Romandy region and maintains strong connections to French-speaking traditions.
The Grand Council of Neuchâtel, consisting of 115 members distributed across six districts, manages local governance and political representation for 176,850 residents.
The canton transformed from the only monarchy in the Swiss Confederation to a republic in 1848, marking a significant shift in its governmental structure.
