Poschiavo, Protected mountain municipality in Bernina Region, Switzerland
Poschiavo is a protected mountain municipality in the Bernina Region, extending across a large area at approximately 1000 meters elevation within the Grisons canton. The village is surrounded by Alpine peaks and displays a settlement pattern blending historical buildings with contemporary living in this mountain landscape.
The settlement first appeared in written records in 824 under the name Postclave, marking the beginning of its documented presence in the region. Over the centuries, it developed into a significant place whose residents maintained connections to distant trade routes.
The town displays Renaissance architecture in its buildings, constructed by residents who made fortunes in Spain during the 19th century. These wealthy merchants brought their taste and experience back home, which remains visible in the elaborate details of the facades.
The Bernina railway line and the main road connect the village directly with the Upper Engadin region via the Bernina Pass. Visitors should prepare for mountainous conditions and changeable weather, especially when traveling by car.
Ten structures in the village hold Swiss heritage status, including Casa Tomé, which now serves as the central local museum. These buildings tell through their architecture about the trade connections that local merchants had established worldwide.
