Pilatussee, Raised bog in Schwarzenberg, Switzerland
Pilatussee is a raised bog near Mount Pilatus at about 1548 meters elevation. The landscape consists of sedge grasses, moss species, and a water system that shapes the entire ecosystem.
In 1594 authorities attempted to drain the lake, which led to the formation of the raised bog we see today. This transformation from water body to peat landscape was a major change for this mountain region.
The name comes from a legend about Pontius Pilate that once kept people away. This story still shapes how locals understand the significance of this mountain location.
Several hiking trails lead to the bog from Pilatus mountain station or the Fräkmüntegg cable car station. The paths are accessible year-round, but mountain weather can change quickly at this elevation.
The main dam was rebuilt between 2014 and 2016 to control water levels in the bog. These works show how actively this ecosystem is managed to ensure its long-term survival.
