Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Autonomous prefecture in southwestern Hubei, China

The prefecture covers 24,500 square kilometers of mountainous terrain within the Wuling Mountains region, containing eight administrative districts and numerous river valleys.

The territory gained autonomous prefecture status after 1949 to preserve indigenous cultures, following centuries of administration under various Chinese imperial dynasties.

The region maintains traditions of the Tujia and Miao peoples, who represent more than half of the local population through their language, customs, and celebrations.

The Yichang-Wanzhou Railway and Xujiaping Airport connect the prefecture with major Chinese cities, while local roads link smaller communities across the mountains.

The prefecture contains significant selenium deposits in its soil, leading to its designation as the selenium capital of China and influencing local agricultural practices.
