Badong Yangtze River Bridge, Cable-stayed bridge in Badong County, China
The Badong Yangtze River Bridge is a cable-stayed crossing that spans approximately 900 meters over the river. Two concrete A-frame towers support double planes of cables that carry the roadway for four lanes of traffic.
Construction of this crossing began in 1999 and was completed in 2001, with the formal opening occurring in 2004. It was built to improve road connections across the river at this strategic location.
The bridge links communities on either side of the Yangtze and serves as a daily passage for residents moving between regions. It has become a recognizable landmark in the local landscape that marks the geography of the area.
The bridge can be crossed on foot or by car and offers good views of the reservoir area below. The best time to cross is during daylight hours when visibility is clear and traffic patterns are predictable.
After the Three Gorges Dam was built, the water level beneath this crossing rose significantly and changed the original clearance height above the river. This means large vessels can no longer pass underneath at this location.
