Linxia City, City in the Autonomous Prefecture Linxia, Gansu Province, China

Linxia City is a city in southwestern Gansu Province and capital of Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture with roughly 370,000 residents. It has narrow streets, older buildings, busy markets, and new modern structures being built gradually, creating a mixed picture of traditional and contemporary elements throughout the urban landscape.

Linxia has been a meeting point for different ethnic groups for many centuries, with names like Han, Daohe, and Hezhou marking different historical eras. The city was an important connection point on the ancient Silk Road and hosts significant Islamic sites like the Nanguan Mosque since the Yuan Dynasty.

Linxia is known as China's 'Little Mecca', where Islamic traditions shape daily life and are visible throughout the city. The place shows this cultural identity through its many mosques with distinctive architecture that blends Chinese pagoda styles with Islamic elements, and through markets that offer mainly halal food while residents wear traditional clothing like white robes and headscarves.

The city is reachable only by road, typically by bus from Lanzhou, taking about two and a half hours. Once there, walking is the best option to explore main centers, while taxis and buses offer inexpensive connections to nearby villages and attractions.

The city displays academic pride on a wall listing students accepted to top universities across the country like Tsinghua University. This emphasis on education is remarkable in a less wealthy region and reflects the community spirit and aspirations of local residents.
