Beijing–Shanghai high-speed railway, High-speed railway line between Beijing and Shanghai, China
The Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway is a modern rail line spanning 1,318 kilometers across seven provinces and connecting Beijing South station with Shanghai Hongqiao. The route crosses flat terrain, river valleys, and urban areas with continuous modern infrastructure throughout.
Construction started in April 2008, and the line opened for commercial service on June 30, 2011, after three years of work. It was one of the country's first large-scale high-speed rail projects and established new standards for railway infrastructure.
The railway links the traditional administrative capital in the north with the commercial and financial hub of the east, shaping how people experience travel between these two centers. It enables passengers to move quickly between very different regions and lifestyles.
Trains travel at speeds up to 350 kilometers per hour and complete the journey between Beijing South and Shanghai Hongqiao in about four and a half hours. Departures are frequent during the day, giving travelers flexible scheduling options.
The Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge viaduct extends for 164 kilometers and ranks among the world's longest continuous bridge structures. This engineering feat spans lakes, river courses, and valley landscapes on a single structure.
