Sun Hung Kai Centre is a 214.5-metre office skyscraper at 30 Harbour Road in Wan Chai, with a dark glass curtain wall gridded by thin mullions and a lit white vertical strip running up the facade. A gold "CENTRE" sign marks the base beside Gloucester Road. It has 56 floors, and its podium holds a shopping mall.
Sun Hung Kai Centre was completed in 1981, designed by Sun Hung Kai Engineering, and was among the first Grade A office towers in Wan Chai North. It originally had 51 floors; five storeys were added in 1991, and its lifts were converted from single-deck to double-deck, the first building in the world to make that change. The government rented about 100,000 square feet in its early years.
The podium from the ground floor to level 2 holds a shopping mall. Its cinema, opened on 8 July 1988, was Hong Kong's first multiplex and showed mainly non-mainstream films until it closed in November 2006 when the lease ended. A McDonald's opened there in December 1981 and moved to its present spot in 1994.
The tower sits at 30 Harbour Road with direct access to public transportation connections. Its position near the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre means the area is easily navigable on foot.
The building's lifts were converted from single-deck to double-deck, the first such conversion in the world. The tower was completed in 1981 with 51 floors; five storeys were added in 1991, bringing it to 56 floors and 214.5 metres.
