Ammar Mosque and Osman Ramju Sadick Islamic Centre, Islamic center in Wan Chai District, Hong Kong.
The Ammar Mosque and Osman Ramju Sadick Islamic Centre is an eight-story building in the Wan Chai District of Hong Kong, housing prayer halls, classrooms, a library, offices, and medical facilities. Prayer spaces are spread across several floors, with ablution rooms on the ground floor and separate areas for men and women throughout the building.
An earlier mosque stood on a nearby site but was demolished when the government needed the land for a road tunnel project. As compensation, a new plot was provided, and the current building opened in 1981, giving the community a larger space than before.
The mosque serves as a meeting point for Muslims from many different backgrounds living in Hong Kong, and on Fridays the building fills with worshippers coming for the midday prayer. Visitors can see how the space is organized around the rhythm of daily prayers, with separate areas for men and women on different floors.
Visitors of all backgrounds are welcome, but modest dress and respectful behavior are expected throughout the building. It is worth coming outside the main prayer times, especially avoiding Friday midday when the building is at its most busy.
The building houses a Halal restaurant and a Halal bakery run by the Muslim community, making it a stop for non-Muslim visitors in Hong Kong who are looking for certified Halal food. The bakery in particular offers baked goods that draw on local flavors while following Islamic dietary rules.
