Hysan Place, Skyscraper and shopping mall in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong.
Hysan Place is a 36-storey tower at 500 Hennessy Road with 17 retail levels below 15 office floors. Its facade has horizontal grey bands above angled glass panels, and the lower section steps outward in layered glass grids. Four express escalators zigzag up the Hennessy Road side, and double-decker lifts serve the upper levels.
Hysan Place opened on 10 August 2012 on the former site of Hennessy Centre, redeveloped by Hysan Development at a cost of up to HK$2.5 billion. Kohn Pedersen Fox designed the tower with DLN Architects as architect on record, and Gammon Construction built it. It was the first Hong Kong building pre-certified LEED Platinum.
The mall is named after Lee Hysan, the early 20th-century businessman whose family firm developed the site. Its 8th to 10th floors held a three-level Eslite bookstore with about 230,000 volumes, and the 11th-floor food court is called Kitchen 11 after its eleven restaurants. On the 4th floor, a 10,000 sq ft sky garden opened as public open space.
The building sits directly above Causeway Bay MTR station, making it easy to reach by public transport. The interior with its many escalators allows comfortable movement between retail and office areas.
The building earned LEED Platinum certification through water-saving features and a system that treats all storm water on site. These environmental measures work quietly behind the scenes in this crowded urban district.
