Songhua River, Major river in Heilongjiang, China
The Songhua River is a major waterway in Heilongjiang that flows from the Changbai Mountains through the Manchurian Plain. It forms the largest tributary of the Heilong River and serves as an important water system in the region.
During the 17th century, the river became strategically important when the emperor positioned naval forces along its course to counter Russian expansion. This period led to major agreements that shaped regional boundaries.
The name comes from a Manchurian term referring to its source at Heavenly Lake in the Changbai Mountains. Local stories along the banks still reflect this connection to the mountain origins.
Medium-sized vessels can navigate to Harbin, while smaller boats continue upstream toward Jilin and through connections to Qiqihar. Water conditions and navigation options change with the seasons throughout the year.
From November to April, the river freezes solid with ice reaching about one meter in thickness, transforming it into a surface for winter activities. This seasonal change creates an entirely different landscape and way of using the waterway.
