Lupu Bridge, Steel arch bridge in Shanghai, China
The Lupu Bridge is a steel arch bridge crossing the Huangpu River in Shanghai, connecting two major city districts on either side. The structure stretches approximately 3900 meters in length and uses a distinctive arched design as its primary support system.
The bridge was completed in 2003 and held the title of world's longest arch bridge at that time. It maintained this record for several years before another bridge took the top position, yet it remained vital to city transportation.
The bridge's name comes from combining references to the two districts it joins, reflecting how Shanghai's neighborhoods connect. It has become a regular crossing point in the daily rhythm of the city for both residents and workers.
The bridge accommodates six lanes of vehicle traffic and permits large cargo ships to pass beneath it. Visitors can best view it from various vantage points along the riverbanks or while taking a river cruise.
The arch structure has the world's largest cross-section, with generous proportions that make it an engineering marvel. This was a decisive factor in why it could become the longest arch bridge in the world when it opened.
