China Art Museum, Art museum in Pudong, China
The China Art Museum is an art museum in Pudong, housed in a multi-story building with large galleries and exhibition spaces. The interior spreads across several floors, with each level displaying paintings, calligraphy, sculptures, and contemporary installations.
The building originally served as the China Pavilion during the 2010 Shanghai World Expo and was converted into an art museum two years later. The institution itself was founded in 1956 and moved to this new location to gain more space for its growing collection.
The name reflects the national scope of the collection, bringing together works from all regions of the country. Visitors can observe locals pausing and photographing particular paintings, especially works by well-known artists from Shanghai.
The museum is located on Binjiang Avenue in Zhoujiadu Subdistrict and opens from 10 AM to 9 PM, with last entry at 8 PM. Visitors wanting to see all floors should plan several hours, as the exhibition areas are large.
The building's red façade comes from its earlier role as an Expo pavilion and recalls traditional Chinese architectural elements. A viewing platform on the roof offers wide views over the city.
