Tung Wah Hospital is a medical building in Central and Western District, Hong Kong, classified as a Grade I historic structure. The facade shows curved rooflines of Chinese influence alongside rectangular windows in European style, while inside wide corridors lead to treatment rooms.
The hospital opened in 1870 under the leadership of Chinese merchants who wanted to provide free care to poor immigrants. Over time the complex expanded several times to accommodate growing numbers of patients.
The name itself combines „Tung
From Sheung Wan MTR Station Exit A2, walk uphill along Po Yan Street for about ten minutes to reach the grounds. Visitors using wheelchairs will find barrier-free paths and elevators connecting all floors inside.
In a small archive room rest handwritten records of thousands of patients from the nineteenth century, including names, places of origin and diagnoses. These documents help descendants today trace lost family branches and reconstruct ancestral lines.
