Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong Bridges Street Centre, Grade I historic building in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong
The Chinese YMCA Bridges Street Centre is a six-storey building combining Chicago School architecture with Chinese roofing styles, built from red brick and concrete. The structure houses multiple functional areas including an assembly hall, social room, fitness facilities, dormitory, library, and swimming pool within its 10,800 square feet of floor space.
Construction began in 1915 with funding from the YMCA in North America and local business leaders, and the center opened to the public in 1918. This opening marked an important moment in bringing organized youth and community services to the area.
Two Chinese maxims carved into the cornerstone read 'Willing to serve the public' and 'One salvation for all peoples', expressing the center's values. These phrases continue to reflect what the place stands for in the community today.
The center is located on Bridges Street in Sheung Wan and operates with different programs throughout the week for youth and community activities. Visitors should check opening hours in advance and note that different facilities within the building may have separate access or participation requirements.
The building includes a swimming pool, an uncommon feature for a community center of this era in Hong Kong. This facility demonstrates the ambition to provide comprehensive recreational and wellness spaces for residents.
