Iron Pagoda, Buddhist pagoda in Kaifeng, China

The octagonal Iron Pagoda stands 56 meters tall with thirteen stories, featuring brown-glazed bricks that give it an iron-like appearance.

Emperor Renzong commissioned this brick pagoda in 1049 to replace a wooden structure that burned down after being struck by lightning in 1044.

The exterior displays 1,600 carved figures, including Buddhist deities and creatures, while 104 bronze bells under the eaves create sounds in the wind.

Visitors can climb the internal spiral staircase to reach multiple observation levels, offering views of Kaifeng from the fifth to ninth floors.

The pagoda has endured 38 earthquakes and six floods over its thousand-year history, remaining stable despite being built on Yellow River silt.
